Couhaib Driouech reflects on failed Rangers move

Moroccan international Souhaib Driouch has opened up about the circumstances surrounding the collapse of his proposed move from PSV Eindhoven to Rangers during the current summer transfer window.

The winger had travelled to Glasgow to complete his transfer to the Scottish giants and was preparing to begin a new chapter in his career. However, the deal unexpectedly broke down following a disagreement over the results of his medical examination.

Driouch subsequently returned to the Netherlands and rejoined PSV Eindhoven’s training sessions, bringing an abrupt end to his planned move to the Scottish Premiership.

Speaking to ESPN, the Moroccan revealed that differences between the medical assessments carried out by PSV and Rangers played a major role in the collapse of the transfer.

According to Driouch, his physical condition was not as serious as some reports had suggested. He explained that he was dealing with a minor hamstring injury which was aggravated after he suffered a knock to his knee shortly before undergoing the medical examination.

“It was an emotional period, but I’m back now. I think there was a difference of opinion between the doctors. I had a minor hamstring tear, and I believe it was aggravated after I took a knock to my knee that week, which caused a bruise,” Driouch said.

The 22-year-old insisted that he is now feeling well and has returned to training with PSV. He also admitted that there was little he could do once the two clubs disagreed over his physical condition and the extent of the injury.

Earlier reports suggested had previously indicated that the medical teams of PSV Eindhoven and Rangers held different opinions regarding Driouch’s injury. The disagreement reportedly centred on the severity of the problem and the amount of time the player would require before being able to return to full competitive action.

The situation ultimately contributed to Rangers deciding against completing the transfer, forcing Driouch to return to Eindhoven.

Despite his disappointment, the Moroccan appears determined to move forward and regain his place in the PSV squad. He is now focused on proving his fitness and putting the failed transfer behind him as he looks ahead to the new season.

Driouch admitted that the proposed move to Rangers was an opportunity he was excited about, having already started imagining himself playing for the Scottish club.

“I would have considered it a great move. It’s unfortunate, but I’m also happy to be back. When you’re there, you’re already thinking about the new team and imagining yourself wearing a different shirt. But it’s not the first time this has happened to me. It’s frustrating, but that’s the reality now,” he said.

Although the Rangers deal has collapsed, Driouch’s future at PSV could still remain uncertain before the transfer window closes. The Moroccan continues to attract interest from other clubs, meaning another opportunity could emerge before the end of the summer.

However, the player is not rushing into a decision and appears comfortable with remaining at PSV if no suitable offer arrives.

“I’ll just wait and see what happens. If something comes up, I’ll deal with it. It’s still unclear, but I’m happy here and I feel at home,” Driouch added.

For now, Driouch will concentrate on regaining full fitness and competing for a place in the PSV squad, while leaving the door open for another potential move before the summer transfer window closes.
