David Odogu joins Toulouse on loan as AC Milan defender seeks fresh start
Toulouse FC have strengthened their defence with the season-long loan signing of Germany Under-17 international David Odogu from AC Milan.
The 20-year-old centre-back arrives in France after a difficult first season in Italy, where limited opportunities with the Rossoneri restricted him to three appearances. Toulouse believe the move can provide Odogu with the regular football he needs to continue his development at the highest level.
Odogu is regarded as one of the most promising defenders of his generation in Germany. Of Nigerian heritage, he has won both the European Under-17 Championship and the Under-17 World Cup.
He joined AC Milan from VfL Wolfsburg last summer in a transfer worth about €7m. However, his time with the Italian club has not developed as he had hoped, with his lack of playing time prompting him to look for a new challenge.
A move to Toulouse gives the young defender the chance to rebuild his momentum and compete for a more consistent role. The French club will hope his experience in youth international football and his status as a highly rated prospect can strengthen their defensive options.
The deal may also have been facilitated by the relationship between Toulouse FC and AC Milan. Both clubs are owned by the RedBird group, creating an established connection between the two organisations.
Odogu is valued at €5m by Transfermarkt and joins Toulouse with the aim of establishing himself in the squad and living up to the expectations surrounding his potential.
His arrival comes shortly before Toulouse begin their Ligue 1 campaign against Lyon. The opening-day fixture will offer the club an early opportunity to assess its preparations for the new season, although it remains to be seen whether Odogu will feature immediately after completing his move.
Toulouse are priced at 3.00 to win the match, while a draw is listed at 3.50 and Lyon are rated at 2.15 by the betting company 1xBet. The company also advertises the option of downloading its 1xBet application.
For Odogu, the move represents an important next step after a season in which first-team football at AC Milan proved difficult to secure. Toulouse will now hope that a player who has already enjoyed success on the international youth stage can translate that promise into regular senior performances in France.
The defender’s immediate challenge will be to adapt to his new surroundings and compete for a place in the Toulouse back line. With his loan lasting for the coming season, the club have secured an opportunity to evaluate his progress while giving Odogu the platform he was unable to find consistently in Italy.
