Glody Makabi Lilepo joins Al Ahly Benghazi on improved two-year deal

Kaizer Chiefs received several approaches for Glody Makabi Lilepo before agreeing to sell the Congolese forward to Libyan club Al Ahly Benghazi, with the 29-year-old now set to earn improved terms under his new two-year contract.

Lilepo’s agreement in Libya is understood to be more lucrative than the deal he held at Kaizer Chiefs. It is also one of the most favourable contracts of his career, following an 18-month spell in South Africa during which Chiefs twice improved his terms.

The forward initially joined the club on a six-month arrangement. Chiefs upgraded his contract at the beginning of the 2025/26 season and made further improvements in January, underlining the club’s belief in his value and their desire to retain him.

His move to Al Ahly Benghazi also made financial sense for Kaizer Chiefs. The club will receive more than the amount it paid to sign Lilepo from French third-tier side Valenciennes in January 2024.

Kaizer Chiefs paid about R9m for the player, while the agreement to sell him to Al Ahly Benghazi was concluded on terms closer to R12m.

Interest in Lilepo increased after a number of leading North African clubs made enquiries. The five highest-placed clubs in the Moroccan Premier League last season – MAS Fez, RS Berkane, Raja Casablanca, AS FAR and Wydad Casablanca – all asked about his availability.

Two of the Moroccan clubs subsequently submitted formal offers to Kaizer Chiefs. There was also interest from Algerian champions MC Alger and Tunisian club Esperance.

Al Ahly Benghazi ultimately moved ahead of the competition by backing up their interest with a concrete proposal. The Libyan side completed the deal within three weeks of entering the race, with Kaizer Chiefs accepting their offer.

Lilepo has already travelled to Libya and begun training with his new team.

His departure brings an end to a period in which Kaizer Chiefs repeatedly demonstrated their willingness to improve his financial package. The club’s decision to agree a sale at a figure above the original investment means they have also secured a profit from the transfer.

The move gives Lilepo the opportunity to continue his career in Libya on a contract that reflects the level of interest he attracted across North Africa. For Al Ahly Benghazi, the agreement secures the services of a player who had been wanted by several established clubs in the region.
