Rodri’s arrival prompts Barcelona move to secure Gavi’s long-term future
Barcelona are preparing to open talks with Gavi over a new contract in the coming months, despite the Spain midfielder already being tied to the club for another four seasons. The planned discussions underline Barcelona’s determination to retain him and strengthen his position within their project following Rodri’s arrival at the Catalan club.
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that Barcelona intend to begin negotiations with Gavi’s representatives, while Manchester United have shown an interest in signing the midfielder at the request of their manager, Michael Carrick.
Gavi’s current agreement runs until 2030, meaning Barcelona are under no immediate pressure to renegotiate his terms. However, the club’s sporting department, led by Deco, and head coach Hansi Flick are understood to be highly satisfied with his development and growing influence within the side.
Barcelona also regard Gavi as one of the central figures in their plans for the future. The proposed contract discussions are therefore designed not only to reward his progress but also to make clear that he remains an important part of the club’s long-term vision.
The 20-year-old is said to be equally settled at Barcelona and has no apparent desire to seek a move elsewhere. Gavi joined the club’s academy before progressing into the first team and considers Barcelona his home. He has also developed a strong relationship with Flick, who has played a significant role in his progress both on and off the pitch.
Flick has made Gavi an important part of his plans for the new season. The midfielder is keen to continue developing at Barcelona and hopes to assume an even more prominent role in the future, with the ambition of eventually becoming club captain.
Manchester United’s interest comes as the English club continues to reshape its midfield. United have spent about 100m euros on the signings of Andre Santos and Youri Tielemans, while their current priority is understood to be the recruitment of a left-back.
Despite those efforts, Barcelona do not appear willing to give United a realistic opportunity to pursue Gavi’s departure. Instead, the Spanish club’s strategy is to safeguard his future with a fresh agreement, sending a clear message about his importance to the sporting project.
Rodri’s move to Barcelona has therefore not displaced Gavi within the club’s plans. Rather, his arrival appears to have encouraged Barcelona’s leadership to reaffirm its confidence in the young midfielder and consider securing his position at an early stage.
A new contract would strengthen Barcelona’s control over Gavi’s future and could effectively close the door on Manchester United’s interest, while giving the player a clearer path towards a more influential role at Camp Nou.
