Marcelo Allende focused on Sundowns results despite uncertain future
Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Marcelo Allende says his priority is helping the club achieve results during the final year of his contract, with no discussions yet held over an extension.
The Chilean international’s current deal expires in June next year. Allende joined Sundowns from Uruguayan club Montevideo City Torque in July 2022 on a three-year contract and has since become an important figure in the team’s success.
The 27-year-old said he had not been approached about renewing his terms and was concentrating solely on his responsibilities on the pitch.
“I am focused on my last year here at the club, and I haven’t spoken to anyone [regarding the extension of my contract]. I am really focused.”
Allende was speaking on Monday at Sundowns’ media open day at their Chloorkop base. The event was held ahead of Wednesday’s league meeting with Marumo Gallants at Loftus Versfeld.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his long-term future, Allende insisted that his commitment to Sundowns would not change whenever he was selected.
“When I have to play, I will always give my 100% … because the most important thing is the result and to bring good things to the club.”
That approach has been reflected in his contribution since moving to the Tshwane giants. Allende has scored 16 goals and provided 16 assists in 177 appearances for Sundowns.
He is expected to feature in some capacity when Sundowns host Marumo Gallants, having helped establish himself as a key player since arriving from Montevideo City Torque.
The midfielder also offered a positive assessment of the team’s preparations for the upcoming league fixture, saying the squad was ready to return to action.
“We’ve been training well, and we are ready for the next one [against Marumo],” he said.
Allende’s comments leave his future beyond June next year unresolved, but his immediate focus remains on Sundowns’ performances and results. With no contract negotiations having taken place, the player has made clear that he is not allowing the situation to distract him as he prepares for the remainder of his current agreement.
His next opportunity to contribute will come against Marumo Gallants at Loftus Versfeld, where Sundowns will look to build on their ongoing success with Allende available to play a role.
