Real Madrid rule out late midfield and defence additions after Rodri disappointment
Real Madrid have decided against making further signings in midfield or defence before the end of the summer transfer window, despite failing to complete a deal for Spain midfielder Rodri, who is now reportedly close to joining rivals Barcelona.
The decision could prompt debate among Real Madrid supporters before the new season begins, with sections of the fanbase unconvinced that the squad has enough depth in two key areas.
According to Spanish radio station Cadena SER, Real Madrid do not plan to sign a midfielder to replace Rodri. The Athletic has also reported that the club has abandoned plans to recruit a high-profile central defender, despite that possibility being under serious consideration in recent weeks.
The position has been taken even though some supporters remain concerned about the strength of the available options in midfield and defence. Real Madrid are preparing for a new campaign under Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho, who has received clear backing from the club’s board during the current transfer window.
The Spanish club had previously acted decisively to strengthen its squad, bringing in several new players. Among those recruits are Ousmane Diomande, Ibrahima Konate and Marc Cucurella.
Bernardo Silva has also made a strong impression during pre-season. His performances have encouraged the coaching staff to believe he can play an important role for Real Madrid during the campaign ahead.
However, the positive signs from the friendly matches have not removed concerns over the centre of the team and the back line. A section of the support had expected further additions, particularly after Real Madrid’s attempt to sign Rodri failed to reach a successful conclusion.
Recent developments suggest Rodri is edging closer to wearing a Barcelona shirt. His potential move to Real Madrid’s main domestic rivals has increased the significance of the decision not to bring in a direct replacement.
Several alternatives had been considered, including Martin Zubimendi and Kees Smit. Neither player is currently part of Real Madrid’s plans, meaning the club is not expected to add another midfielder during the remaining days of the transfer window unless unexpected developments change the situation.
The outlook is similar in defence. Real Madrid’s hierarchy is understood to have moved away from the idea of signing another central defender, with Mourinho believed to have five players available in that position.
The manager can also use Aurelien Tchouameni as an emergency option in central defence if required. That additional flexibility appears to have contributed to the club’s decision to trust its existing squad rather than pursue another late deal.
Real Madrid will therefore begin the new season without the midfield signing that had been viewed as a potential response to losing Rodri and without the top-class centre-back addition that had also been discussed. For now, the club’s recruitment work in those positions is considered complete, barring an unforeseen change before the transfer window closes.
