Barcelona close Rodri deal with Manchester City for potential €76m package
Barcelona are expected to officially announce the signing of Rodri from Manchester City within the next few hours after reaching an agreement with the Premier League club.
The transfer has now been completed following negotiations that lasted longer than anticipated, with Manchester City’s firm approach at the negotiating table making the process particularly difficult.
According to Sport, Barcelona secured the deal with a final offer built around a guaranteed payment of €60m. That figure represents the maximum amount the Catalan club was prepared to pay immediately, with additional performance-related payments included in the agreement.
The overall package could rise by a further €16m. Of that amount, €10m is linked to a complicated set of conditions based on the number of appearances Rodri makes. A separate €6m will only be payable if targets considered easier to achieve are fulfilled.
Barcelona examined the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed transfer before giving final approval. The club has agreed a four-year contract with Rodri, who will earn slightly more than €13m net per season.
That salary will place him among the highest-paid players in Barcelona’s squad. The level of remuneration reflects the club’s decision to bring in a player who has won the Ballon d’Or.
Manchester City have also accepted a payment structure that allows Barcelona to settle the transfer fee in manageable instalments, rather than paying the entire amount immediately.
The agreement brings an end to a negotiation process in which the two clubs had to settle both the guaranteed value of the transfer and the conditions attached to the additional payments. Barcelona’s final proposal, centred on the €60m fixed fee, ultimately proved sufficient to secure Manchester City’s approval.
Rodri’s contract will run for four years, while the salary agreed with Barcelona has been settled at a figure just above €13m net each season. The arrangement makes the midfielder one of the most highly rewarded members of the squad from the moment the transfer is formally announced.
The remaining details of the deal concern the variables. The first €10m in potential additions is tied closely to Rodri’s appearances, meaning the payment depends on how often he plays. The further €6m is connected to objectives that are less complicated to meet, although those conditions remain part of the agreed package.
Barcelona’s formal confirmation is now expected shortly. With the fixed fee, the performance-related additions, the four-year contract and the salary all agreed, the transfer is described as settled and closed after the lengthy discussions with Manchester City.
