Former Sundowns star says Kaizer Chiefs’ tactical plan earned 1-1 draw
Mamelodi Sundowns did not underperform in their 1-1 draw with Kaizer Chiefs, according to former Masandawana player Papi Mbele, who believes Amakhosi’s tactical execution was the decisive feature of Saturday’s entertaining Betway Premiership contest at FNB Stadium.
The match provided an engaging spectacle for the supporters in attendance, with both sides finding the net and producing a contest that attracted praise from Mbele. Rather than viewing the result as evidence of Sundowns failing to reach their usual standards, the former player said Kaizer Chiefs deserved recognition for the way they approached the game.
“ Sundowns did not underperform; Chiefs demonstrated an understanding of Sundowns’ style of play, effectively utilising counter-pressing and counter-attacking strategies, which they executed commendably,” Mbele told KickOff.
Mbele said Sundowns continued to follow their established playing philosophy despite the pressure applied by Kaizer Chiefs. He also believes the reigning approach of the team has developed significantly compared with last season.
“Sundowns maintained their playing style despite the pressure from Chiefs. The team has shown significant improvement since last season.”
The performance has led Mbele to expect Kaizer Chiefs to become a difficult opponent for a number of teams during the campaign. He described the fixture as a tactical battle in which both teams managed their plans effectively, while the two goals came after errors rather than sustained dominance from either side.
“Chiefs will give a lot of teams headaches this season. The game on Saturday was tactically well-managed by both sides. Goals were scored due to mistakes from each team, reflecting their strategic approach during the match. There is a notable quality within this Chiefs squad.”
The former Mamelodi Sundowns player also singled out Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz for the influence he has had on the team’s recent performances. Mbele pointed to the coach’s focus on controlled and disciplined possession as an important part of the improvement he has seen from Amakhosi.
However, Mbele identified the goal Kaizer Chiefs conceded as the result of an error by goalkeeper Brandon Petersen. Sundowns’ Cassius Mailula scored the equaliser, with Mbele noting the contrast in height between the scorer and the players around him.
“Their coach [Fernando da Cruz] emphasises disciplined ball possession, as evidenced by Cassius Mailula, the shortest player on the field, who scored for Sundowns following a mistake by the Chiefs goalkeeper [Brandon Petersen], who chose to focus on the player’s head rather than the ball,” Mbele added.
The draw ensured that the attention remained on the quality of the contest and Kaizer Chiefs’ ability to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns’ style. For Mbele, the performance at FNB Stadium was an indication that the Naturena-based side can trouble opponents throughout the Betway Premiership season, while Sundowns’ response under pressure showed that their own playing identity remains intact.
