Arsenal cruise past Manchester City to retain Community Shield

Arsenal began the new season with a commanding 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield, with Martin Ødegaard, Kai Havertz and Riccardo Calafiori finding the net at Wembley.

The Gunners made the perfect start when Calafiori opened the scoring inside the first 30 seconds. Myles Lewis-Skelly sent the Arsenal left-back through with a well-weighted pass, and Calafiori finished the move with a powerful strike.

The match settled after that explosive opening, with neither side able to create another clear opportunity for a sustained period. Arsenal eventually doubled their advantage when Ødegaard delivered a cross into the penalty area. New signing Christos Tzolis got a touch to the ball and directed it towards Havertz, who converted to make it 2-0.

Manchester City created their first serious chance to reduce the deficit in the 40th minute. Erling Haaland met the opportunity but saw his effort stopped by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.

Arsenal came close to adding a third before half-time, but Calafiori’s attempt sailed well over the crossbar.

The reigning domestic champions quickly extended their lead after the interval. Ødegaard scored Arsenal’s third goal of the afternoon, with Tzolis providing the assist.

City manager then replaced Haaland with Omar Marmoush in the 53rd minute as Manchester City looked for a way back into the contest. However, Arsenal continued to look the more dangerous side and nearly added a fourth when Bukayo Saka shot narrowly over the crossbar with 10 minutes remaining.

Manchester City struggled to produce clear-cut chances throughout the game and were without Tijjani Reijnders. The Netherlands international is on the verge of joining Al Qadsiah.

Arsenal were also missing Jurrien Timber, who remains in recovery from a groin injury. His absence did not prevent the Gunners from securing a second trophy in a short period.

The Community Shield victory follows Arsenal’s Premier League title triumph last season. Both teams will begin their league campaigns next weekend, with Arsenal carrying significant early-season momentum and Manchester City facing an immediate need to respond.
