Scotland appoint Sebastian Pocognoli as new head coach

Scotland have appointed Sebastian Pocognoli as their new head coach, with the Belgian taking charge after Steve Clarke left the role following the end of the World Cup.

Scotland were eliminated in the group stage of the tournament, bringing Clarke’s time as manager to a close. Clarke had guided the national team to their first World Cup appearance in 28 years, but the campaign ended before the knockout stages.

Pocognoli’s appointment represents his first move into international management. His most recent coaching position was with French club Monaco, where he oversaw 38 matches.

During that spell, Monaco recorded 16 victories, drew nine games and suffered 13 defeats. Pocognoli will now move from club football to lead Scotland, taking charge of a national side that has recently returned to the World Cup after a lengthy absence.

The 37-year-old previously managed Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise. His time at the club brought silverware, including the Belgian league title and the Belgian Super Cup.

Pocognoli therefore arrives with domestic honours from his work in Belgium, as well as experience of managing in France with Monaco. His appointment follows Scotland’s disappointing World Cup exit and the departure of Clarke, who had overseen the team’s return to the competition after 28 years away.

The new Scotland manager’s record at Monaco stands at 16 wins, nine draws and 13 losses from 38 matches. He will now begin his first role with a national team as Scotland look to move on from their group-stage elimination and the end of Clarke’s tenure.
