Arsenal claim Community Shield as Maresca suffers unwanted Manchester City first-match record

Arsenal began the new season with a commanding 3-0 victory over Manchester City at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on Sunday, securing the English Community Shield for the 18th time in the club’s history.

Maresca is only the second manager to lose his opening Manchester City match by three goals or more. The previous occasion came in 1906, when Harry Newbould’s side were beaten 4-1 by Arsenal.

The outcome also gave Arsenal their biggest winning margin in a Community Shield fixture since 2014. On that occasion, they defeated Manchester City by the same 3-0 scoreline, underlining the club’s record in this particular meeting between the two sides.

Arsenal’s latest success further strengthened their position in one of the most significant fixtures on the English football calendar. They not only claimed the trophy but did so with a performance that reflected their authority throughout the match and a scoreline that left Manchester City facing an early setback.

Christos Tzolis was another of the evening’s outstanding figures. The Arsenal player created two or more goals in his first start for the club, immediately making his mark in a major competitive fixture.

Opta said Tzolis had become the first player to provide at least two assists in a Community Shield match since David Beckham in 1996. Beckham achieved the same feat for Manchester United against Newcastle.

The performance added an individual landmark to Arsenal’s team success, with Tzolis matching a statistical achievement associated with one of English football’s best-known players. His contribution helped Arsenal turn a strong display into a decisive victory and ensured the club’s 18th Community Shield triumph began the new season on a high.

For Manchester City, the defeat was notable not only because of the margin but also because it equalled a record that had stood since Newbould’s loss to Arsenal 120 years earlier. Maresca will therefore begin his Manchester City tenure with a difficult result to absorb, while Arsenal can look ahead after lifting the trophy in emphatic fashion.
