Ruben Dias admits Manchester City are in transition after Arsenal defeat

Ruben Dias says Manchester City must work through a period of transition after their disappointing 3-0 defeat by Arsenal in the English Community Shield final.

Arsenal secured a convincing victory over Manchester City in the final, which was played in Cardiff, Wales. The result left Dias frustrated, although the defender insisted the team must now focus on moving forward and preparing for the start of the new season.

“Clearly, what we produced was not enough, and I would like to thank the fans who came to support us at the game and travelled a long distance,” Dias told TNT after the match.

The defeat came in a final City wanted to win, but Dias stressed that the Community Shield was only the beginning of the campaign. He said the squad’s immediate priority was to respond positively and prepare for its next fixture.

“This is only the start of the season and the most important thing is that we are looking to move forward and prepare for the next game,” he added.

Dias also explained that his own preparation had been disrupted after joining the team midway through pre-season. The match against Arsenal was only his third appearance since returning, making the loss particularly frustrating despite the wider context of the early stage of the season.

“I joined the team in the middle of pre-season and this is my third game since returning, but the defeat is frustrating because this was a final we wanted to win,” he said.

Manchester City’s difficulties, according to Dias, reflect the demands of rebuilding and adjusting during a transitional period. He acknowledged that a team in transition cannot expect everything to be perfect immediately, but said the players must maintain their commitment.

“I feel that the current transitional period requires a lot of effort, and in any transitional period it is normal for things not to be perfect at the beginning. We have to persevere and keep working,” Dias said.

The Portugal defender remained confident that City were heading in the right direction, while warning that a demanding season lay ahead.

“I think we are going in the right direction, but we need to continue working, and there will be a lot of challenges waiting for us,” he concluded.

Manchester City will begin their Premier League campaign against Bournemouth. The opening league fixture gives Pep Guardiola’s side an immediate opportunity to respond to the Community Shield disappointment and begin the season with a positive result.
