Orlando Pirates bounce back in style with 3-0 win over Chippa United

South African Premiership defending champions Orlando Pirates have responded emphatically to their midweek setback, cruising to a convincing 3-0 victory over Chippa United at Kings Park Stadium in Durban on Sunday.

The Buccaneers went into the encounter knowing that another dropped points would raise further questions about their start to the campaign after opening the season with a victory over Milford FC before being held to a 1-1 draw by AmaZulu at the same venue earlier in the week.

With pressure mounting for a response, Abdeslam Ouaddou’s charges delivered exactly what was required, producing a commanding second-half performance to secure all three points and move to the top of the Betway Premiership standings.

Pirates dominated large spells of the opening half and created opportunities but were unable to find the breakthrough. Chippa United remained disciplined and frustrated the champions, with the two sides going into the interval level at 0-0.

The game changed after the break. Pirates finally broke the deadlock on the hour mark when Ghampani Lungu produced the moment of quality they had been searching for. The Zambian attacker found space and unleashed a powerful effort that beat Chippa goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali to put the Buccaneers 1-0 ahead.

The opening goal completely shifted the momentum in Pirates’ favour, and they doubled their advantage only three minutes later.

Lebone Seema rose highest from a corner to head home and make it 2-0, putting the defending champions firmly in control of proceedings.

Chippa struggled to recover from the quick double blow as Pirates continued to dominate the contest and looked increasingly dangerous in attack.

The victory was sealed late on when Daniel Msendami added a third in the 88th minute. The Zimbabwean forward pounced after winning possession before calmly finishing past Nwabali to put the result beyond doubt. It was his first goal for Orlando Pirates since joining the club.

The 3-0 victory gives Pirates seven points from their opening three league matches and puts their title defence back on track.

For Ouaddou, the result also provides a timely response after the frustration of the AmaZulu draw. The French-Moroccan coach will be particularly pleased with the way his side transformed their dominance into goals after the interval.

Pirates will now look to build on the victory as they continue their campaign, having demonstrated that they remain serious contenders in the race to retain the Betway Premiership crown.
