Egyptian Premier League 2026-27: Key dates, opening fixtures and how to watch

The Egyptian Premier League’s 2026-27 season will begin on Friday, 21 August 2026, with 20 clubs competing under a new format before the title race and relegation battle are decided in separate final groups.

The first phase will run until 20 February 2027, with every team playing 19 matches for a total of 190 games. The competition will then move into its decisive stage on 8 March, with the league scheduled to conclude in May 2027, when the champions will be presented with the trophy.

The Egyptian Clubs Association has confirmed that matches during the regular season will generally kick off at 17:00 and 20:00 local time on normal days. During Ramadan, fixtures will be moved to 21:30 to take account of fasting, the timing of iftar and supporters’ ability to attend matches.

After the opening phase, the 20 clubs will be divided according to their league positions. The six highest-ranked teams will enter a championship group, where they will play one another home and away in 15 matches. That group will decide the Egyptian Premier League winners and determine which clubs qualify for CAF competitions, including the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.

The remaining 14 teams, finishing from seventh to 20th, will form the relegation group. They are expected to play 91 matches in a contest aimed at avoiding relegation to the Professional League. The second half of the table is expected to be closely contested because of the similar strength of the teams involved.

Four clubs will be relegated to the Professional League at the end of the current season. As only three teams will be promoted from the second division, the 2027-28 Egyptian Premier League is set to feature 19 clubs as part of a gradual reduction in the size of the competition.

The Egyptian Premier League remains one of Africa and the Arab world’s most prominent competitions, with Al Ahly, Zamalek and Pyramids FC dominating domestic and continental discussion. Pyramids FC’s success in the 2024-25 CAF Champions League, combined with their strong challenge in the previous campaign, has established them as a serious third force alongside the traditional Egyptian giants.

The 2025-26 season produced a close contest between Zamalek, Pyramids FC and Al Ahly, with Zamalek securing the title on the final matchday. The 2026-27 campaign will also be notable for the absence of Ismaily, who are missing from the top flight for only the second time in their history and for the first time in 68 years. The club were relegated for the first time in 1957-58.
