Aston Villa turn Paris Saint-Germain setback into move for Zion Suzuki

Aston Villa have reached a final agreement to sign Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma, taking the player from under the noses of Paris Saint-Germain after the European champions’ negotiations broke down.

The Premier League club have agreed terms with both Suzuki and Parma and have begun exchanging the documents required to complete the transfer, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Villa matched the financial offer previously made by Paris Saint-Germain and then secured an agreement with the 23-year-old goalkeeper. The deal is now at its final stage, with an official announcement expected in the coming hours.

Paris Saint-Germain had been close to completing the signing after reaching an agreement with Parma and Suzuki’s representatives. The proposed transfer was understood to be worth about €35m, but the negotiations collapsed unexpectedly in the final hours.

According to French newspaper L’Equipe, Paris Saint-Germain decided to withdraw after Suzuki’s representatives significantly increased their financial demands. The player’s representatives reportedly asked for an additional commission of almost €3m, a request Paris Saint-Germain viewed as “blackmail” and refused to accept.

The French club then attempted to contact Suzuki directly to explain its position. However, the goalkeeper’s advisers prevented him from responding to calls from Paris Saint-Germain officials, after which the club made the final decision to end negotiations and close the file.

Villa reacted quickly to the failed talks. They moved for Suzuki, matched the offer put forward by Paris Saint-Germain and received the goalkeeper’s approval, allowing the transfer to progress towards completion.

The agreement means Suzuki is now expected to move to the Premier League, subject to the formal completion of the paperwork and the official confirmation from Aston Villa and Parma.

The transfer represents a sudden change in direction for a deal that appeared to be moving towards Paris Saint-Germain. The French side had been regarded as the closest club to signing Suzuki during the past few days, having already reached an understanding with Parma and the player’s camp.

Instead, Villa have taken advantage of the breakdown between the European champions and the goalkeeper’s representatives. Their decision to equal Paris Saint-Germain’s financial proposal and move quickly has put them in position to complete the signing.

Suzuki joined Parma and has become the subject of growing interest, with his performances attracting attention from major European clubs. Paris Saint-Germain’s withdrawal opened the way for Villa to secure the Japan international, who is now waiting for the final formalities before his transfer is announced.
