Valverde begins Real Madrid captaincy with place in midfield under threat

Federico Valverde’s first major challenge as Real Madrid captain will be to convince Jose Mourinho that he deserves a regular place in a midfield where three players are competing for two positions.

The Uruguay international has been handed the captain’s armband this season after a journey that began when he joined Real Madrid from Penarol in 2016. He progressed through every level of the club before reaching the top at the age of 28, having won almost every major honour available to him.

However, the captaincy at Real Madrid has never been regarded as a position of comfort. At the Santiago Bernabeu, it is both recognition for years of service and a significant responsibility, with the role carrying a weight rarely matched elsewhere in football.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Valverde’s appointment also presents a purely sporting test. Alongside leading Mourinho’s side, he must establish himself in a midfield that has become a complicated tactical contest.

Mourinho is expected to use a double-pivot system, with three leading candidates competing for the two available places. Following the collapse of Real Madrid’s move for Rodri, new signing Bernardo Silva has emerged as an essential figure in Mourinho’s plans.

Bernardo Silva is considered the only available player capable of operating as a clear playmaker and organiser from midfield. That leaves one remaining place to be decided, with Aurelien Tchouameni and Valverde competing directly for it.

The contest carries an extra layer of interest because of an incident involving the two players last season at Valdebebas. A confrontation between them resulted in Valverde being taken to hospital.

That dispute has since been left behind, with the pair having reconciled. Yet the demands of football mean they are now competing for the same role, unless Bernardo Silva is left out of the starting line-up and Mourinho chooses to use both players together in central midfield.

Valverde and Tchouameni offer very different qualities. Valverde’s energy allows him to cover large areas, close gaps and ease the workload on his team-mates. His athleticism could also make him an option on the right wing, although the arrival of Diomande makes that alternative more difficult.

Tchouameni, meanwhile, appears to fit Mourinho’s tactical ideas more naturally. He offers defensive strength, uses the ball effectively and can be tasked with protecting Bernardo Silva while also covering the team’s defensive responsibilities.

Valverde starts the season with a clear advantage in terms of preparation. He was among the first members of the squad to return after the World Cup and played in every friendly during pre-season, producing encouraging performances.

He has also taken on the role of the team’s public spokesman, praising Mourinho and welcoming new arrivals including Bernardo Silva.

Tchouameni has had a contrasting start. He was unable to play in any of the pre-season friendlies and is the only member of the first-team squad not to have featured during the preparations.

A demanding and congested fixture schedule should provide both midfielders with ample opportunities to collect playing time. The immediate issue, though, is who can persuade Mourinho that they are the right choice to occupy the key remaining position at the heart of the team.

For Valverde, the best way to honour the captaincy will be to justify it on the pitch, match after match, rather than relying on his status to secure his place in the side.
