Nayef Aguerd says recovery timetable blocked Real Sociedad return

Nayef Aguerd has denied that a medical problem prevented his move to Real Sociedad, saying the transfer collapsed because of disagreements over how quickly he should return to competitive football after surgery.

The Olympique de Marseille defender said the medical examinations he completed before the proposed move “went well” and were approved by both clubs. He insisted that his physical condition was not the cause of the failed transfer, with the dispute instead centred on the plan for his return to action after a period away from the pitch.

Aguerd, who has won 59 caps for Morocco, explained that he wanted to make a gradual comeback following surgery in the groin area. His priority was to regain full physical fitness before being used regularly.

However, the Real Sociedad coaching staff, led by Pellegrino Matarazzo, wanted to be able to rely on him immediately. The difference between the two sides over the appropriate recovery programme ultimately brought the negotiations to an end.

“[The medical examinations] went well,” Aguerd said in a statement shared through his social media accounts, adding that they had received approval from both clubs.

The Morocco international also made clear that he respected Matarazzo’s position and said there had been no personal disagreement, nor any medical issue, behind the breakdown of the deal.

Reports in the Spanish media had suggested that a physical problem discovered during the medical examination was responsible for Aguerd’s move to Real Sociedad falling through. The defender rejected that explanation, saying the only unresolved matter was the protocol for rebuilding his fitness gradually and safely.

Aguerd previously played for Real Sociedad and stressed that his decision should not be interpreted as criticism of the club. He said he retained a particular appreciation for the Spanish side and that his stance had been motivated by responsibility and a desire to protect his physical condition throughout the season.

The defender also reaffirmed his commitment to Olympique de Marseille. He said he understood the club’s financial situation and that further changes could take place before the transfer window closes.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Aguerd said he would continue to give everything for the French club while he remained on its books. He pledged to defend the colours of Olympique de Marseille and support his team-mates and the club’s supporters.
