Bordeaux’s future in French football hangs in the balance after ban is upheld

Girondins de Bordeaux have suffered another major setback in their fight for survival after the French Football Federation backed a recommendation to maintain the club’s exclusion from national competitions.

The decision follows a financial assessment by the federation’s appeals committee, with Bordeaux facing a severe funding crisis that threatens its immediate future. The French Football Federation said in an official statement that it supported the conciliation proposal put forward by the French National Olympic and Sports Committee.

It also described the appeals committee’s evaluation of Bordeaux’s financial position as “justified” and urged the club to accept the disputed decision.

Bordeaux had reacted with surprise earlier on Saturday to the recommendation from the French National Olympic and Sports Committee. The club said the recommendation was “not a decision but a recommendation”, insisting that final authority rested with the executive committee of the French Football Federation.

That body is responsible for determining the club’s fate, according to Bordeaux.

The dispute centres on the club’s inability to secure about 10 million euros required to complete the 2025-26 season and finance the campaign that follows. In late July, British investment fund Sparta Capital acquired Bordeaux from businessman Gerard Lopez for a symbolic €1 and began working to provide the financial guarantees needed to rescue the club.

However, the situation became more difficult after 10 top-flight clubs criticised Bordeaux’s latest attempt to remain in the national system. They said the funds that were supposed to be supplied as financial guarantees had not been paid by the deadline set by the national committee.

The latest ruling leaves Bordeaux’s place in French football in serious doubt. The club had been preparing to play in the National first division, but is now excluded from all national competitions.

Under the most favourable outcome available in the current circumstances, Bordeaux could be relegated to the regional first division, which is the sixth tier of the French football pyramid.

The club now has 15 days to appeal against the decision before the administrative court. That legal challenge represents Bordeaux’s final opportunity to prevent the collapse of one of France’s most historic clubs.

The latest development adds to months of uncertainty surrounding Girondins de Bordeaux, whose financial difficulties have already forced the club to seek new ownership and emergency funding. Sparta Capital’s takeover was intended to secure the guarantees needed to keep the club operating, but the failure to meet the required deadline has left its proposed rescue under renewed scrutiny.

With the French Football Federation supporting the recommendation to retain the exclusion, Bordeaux’s prospects of competing in national football have become increasingly fragile. The administrative court will now provide the club with its last available route to overturn the decision and avoid a drop to regional football.
