Kaizer Chiefs hold Mamelodi Sundowns to tense Betway Premiership draw

Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns shared the points after a dramatic 1-1 draw at FNB Stadium, with Langelihle Phili scoring his first goal for Amakhosi before Cassius Mailula equalised for the visitors.

The match only found its rhythm after half-time, potentially following strong interventions from Chiefs manager Fernando da Cruz and Sundowns boss Miguel Cardoso. After a quiet opening period, the tempo increased and both sides produced a much more competitive contest.

Chiefs took the lead after 62 minutes when Phili announced himself to the Amakhosi supporters with an accomplished finish. The hosts had been growing in influence and were rewarded when Siphesihle Ndlovu dribbled past Grant Kekana and Bathusi Aubaas before finding Phili.

Phili controlled the ball inside the area and fired a low shot past Ronwen Williams at the near post, sending the stadium into celebration. The goal carried particular significance for the attacker, who was overcome with emotion and removed his shirt during the celebrations.

That brought a yellow card, and Da Cruz replaced Phili a few minutes later to prevent the forward from risking a second booking and a possible red card.

The drama at FNB Stadium continued nine minutes later when Sundowns drew level through substitute Mailula. Khuliso Mudau sent a long ball into the penalty area, Kekana redirected it towards Mailula and the striker headed beyond Brandon Petersen, seemingly with his first touch of the match.

Petersen was unable to react quickly enough to prevent the equaliser, which gave Sundowns a share of the spoils and highlighted Mailula’s potential importance following his return to the club after a frustrating spell in the United States and Europe.

Chiefs remain top of the standings with seven points from their opening three league matches. Holding a Sundowns team packed with players who won last season’s Champions League, as well as footballers who represented Bafana Bafana at the 2026 Fifa World Cup in the United States and Mexico, will provide Da Cruz’s side with considerable confidence.

Cardoso, meanwhile, will have difficult questions for his players after Sundowns struggled to impose themselves during the first half. They lacked control and failed to create clear-cut opportunities, while their defensive structure was exposed for Chiefs’ opening goal.

Sundowns made several changes after the interval. Siyanda Ndlovu, Bennet Mokoena, Mailula, Divine Lunga and Lebogang Mothiba were introduced for Antonio van Wyk, Sphelele Mkhulise, Tashreeq Matthews, Aubrey Modiba and Brayan Leon.

Da Cruz also brought on Wandile Duba, Ethan Chislett and Adolf Mtasingwa in place of Luke Baartman, Phili and Lebohang Maboe, but the changes did not allow Chiefs to exert greater control over the match.

Chiefs had reshaped their defence before kick-off, with Reeve Frosler and Dillan Solomons left out of the starting line-up and Thabo Moloisane making his first appearance in Amakhosi colours. Moloisane impressed as part of a back three alongside Inacio Miguel and Zitha Kwinika.

With Leon operating as Sundowns’ lone striker, Thabiso Monyane and Pule Mmodi were used as wing-backs. Da Cruz selected a defensive midfield trio of Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Siphesihle Ndlovu and Lebohang Maboe to counter the threat posed by Marcelo Allende, Mkhulise and Aubaas.

Cardoso had also changed his team from the opening match against TS Galaxy, selecting Kekana and Modiba instead of Malibongwe Khoza and Fawaaz Basadien. Aubaas replaced the injured Teboho Mokoena, while Van Wyk, Matthews and Leon formed the attacking options.

Both teams struggled with their decision-making in the opening stages, and the first meaningful attack did not arrive until the 40th minute, leaving the crowd frustrated.

Chiefs won a free-kick just outside the penalty area, but Moloisane’s close-range header went straight at Williams. Sundowns responded with a quick counter-attack, although Zitha Kwinika cleared a dangerous Mudau cross intended for Leon.

Chiefs had another chance after 55 minutes when Monyane failed to control the ball in a promising position, allowing Williams to recover and clear. Sundowns conceded a free-kick during the goalkeeper’s desperate attempt to remove the danger, but Maboe’s effort from the edge of the box missed the target.

In the end, neither side could find a winner, with the evening concluding in handshakes and embraces between two of South Africa’s football heavyweights.
