Abdellah Ouazane: Ajax youngster praised after Morocco call-up

Abdellah Ouazane has been named by The Guardian among the 60 most promising young players in the world born in 2009, highlighting the Ajax Amsterdam midfielder’s technical ability and growing reputation.

The Morocco youth international is noted for his close control, composure under pressure and ability to operate in tight spaces. Nabil Baha, who previously coached Ouazane with Morocco Under-17s, has also praised his football intelligence, tactical discipline and confidence.

Speaking to Africafoot, Baha said Ouazane’s ability to make the right decisions was one of his most developed qualities for a player of his age. He believes that judgement is a significant advantage for a midfielder who has attracted interest from major European clubs.

Ouazane’s name was linked with Real Madrid during the summer of 2025, underlining the attention surrounding his potential.

Baha highlights Ajax influence

Baha believes Ouazane’s tactical discipline has been shaped in part by his development at the Ajax academy. He described the young midfielder as an efficient player who avoids unnecessary touches and chooses solutions according to the situation and the needs of his team.

He also pointed to Ouazane’s personality on the pitch. The midfielder is prepared to show confidence and take risks, even in difficult matches, while possessing the qualities required to help organise play and connect the different areas of his side.

Another strength identified by Baha is Ouazane’s comfort using both feet. That versatility allows him to vary his passing, dribbling and changes of direction while retaining control when opponents apply pressure.

The Morocco Under-17s coach also praised his awareness of spaces between the opposition midfield and defence. Ouazane can exploit those gaps and play through balls capable of putting team-mates in positions to score.

Baha believes the midfielder can still become more influential in attack, particularly by carrying the ball forward and attempting more shots from distance. He pointed to Ouazane’s performances for Morocco’s youth teams, including at the Africa Cup of Nations Under-17s, where he was named player of the tournament.

‘Courageous and well-considered’ decision

Baha described Mohamed Ouahbi’s decision to call Ouazane up to the senior Morocco squad as “courageous and well-considered”.

He said the opportunity would allow the teenager to experience the demands of the highest level and work alongside more experienced players. Baha added that introducing young talent gradually to international football can accelerate technical and tactical development, provided players are given time to adjust to their new responsibilities.

In his view, Ouazane’s promotion rewards his performances for Morocco’s youth sides and sends an encouraging message to other national prospects: strong performances and hard work can lead to senior international opportunities, regardless of age.

Baha has urged Ouazane to remain focused on his daily work and continue improving his efficiency in the final third. He also warned him not to be distracted by media attention, speculation about his future or transfer rumours.

The former Morocco Under-17s coach further emphasised the importance of defensive responsibilities in the modern game as Ouazane continues his development.
