Al Ahly close to signing Petrojet left-back Tawfik Mohamed
Al Ahly are close to completing the signing of Petrojet left-back Tawfik Mohamed, after receiving the player’s release documents on Saturday morning.
The 26-year-old has also completed a photography session with Al Ahly ahead of the club’s expected official announcement of the deal later on Saturday.
Mohamed underwent a medical examination at a hospital in Giza on Friday, as Al Ahly moved to finalise an agreement with Petrojet during the summer transfer window.
The player has signed a five-year contract with Al Ahly, with the deal understood to have been completed earlier this week. The move will provide competition at left-back as Al Ahly seek to cover for Youssef Belammari, who is set to miss the entire season because of a serious knee injury.
Al Ahly confirmed that Belammari had suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during their friendly against Spanish side Badalona. The Moroccan defender was introduced in the second half of that match and played at left-back after Karim Fouad had started in the position.
Mohamed has been a Petrojet player since 2022. He made 31 appearances for the club last season and provided one assist.
Across domestic competitions, including the league, cup and Super Cup, he has played 55 matches for Petrojet and created two goals.
His arrival is part of Al Ahly’s preparations for a demanding period, with the club currently holding a training camp in Spain. The camp will continue until 20 August and includes daily intensive training sessions as well as a number of friendly matches.
Al Ahly are also scheduled to face Barcelona in the Joan Gamper Trophy on 19 August.
The club began their Spanish preparations with a friendly against Badalona, in which Fouad started at left-back before Belammari took over after the interval. Belammari’s injury has increased the urgency around Al Ahly’s efforts to strengthen the position before the new campaign begins.
Al Ahly will open their league campaign against Eastern Company and ENPPI, before ending the first half of the season with a match against Wadi Degla.
The agreement with Petrojet and Mohamed’s completed medical and contractual formalities leave only the official announcement before the transfer can be confirmed by Al Ahly.
