Fernando Da Cruz says settled Mamelodi Sundowns have edge over Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz says Mamelodi Sundowns’ greater experience of working together gives them a significant advantage before their Betway Premiership meeting at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 15 August.

Da Cruz believes Sundowns will arrive with the benefit of a settled squad, with many of their players having played alongside one another for a considerable period. He also pointed to the length of time their coach has been in the role as another important difference between the two teams.

Kaizer Chiefs, by contrast, remain in the early stages of building their side under the French coach. Da Cruz has only recently taken charge and is still introducing his preferred game model, while his players continue to understand and adjust to his methods.

“The difference that’s there between Chiefs and Sundowns is that players at Sundowns have played together for the long time,” said Da Cruz.

“Also their coach has been there for the long time. Meanwhile, I have just arrived and I’m applying my game model on the field.

“Yes, the players are understanding very well but we need time. So, it will be two different styles of football. But don’t worry, the team will be ready.”

Da Cruz’s assessment comes as Kaizer Chiefs prepare for a match against opponents he regards as more established in terms of squad continuity and coaching stability. While Sundowns have had time to develop their collective understanding, Da Cruz is seeking to create that same cohesion within a team still learning how he wants them to play.

The coach nevertheless says he has been encouraged by Kaizer Chiefs’ possession figures during their opening three matches of the season. His side have generally controlled more of the ball than their opponents, although he accepts that pattern may change against Mamelodi Sundowns.

“Since the beginning of the season, I’ve been very happy with our ball possession,” he added.

“We have had more of the ball than our opponents. But maybe on Saturday it will be different but sometimes we also need to keep the ball during this game.”

Da Cruz’s comments underline the challenge facing Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium. His team have shown progress in retaining possession, but the coach recognises that facing Mamelodi Sundowns could produce a different contest.

The Frenchman says his players are responding well to the ideas he is introducing, but also stresses that developing a new style requires time. Despite the contrast between the two squads, he remains confident that Kaizer Chiefs will be prepared for Saturday’s Betway Premiership fixture.
