Kilian Nikiema explains Burkina Faso's Argentina trip cancellation

Burkina Faso goalkeeper Kilian Nikiema says repeated flight delays and concerns over player fitness led the Stallions to cancel their planned trip to Argentina for an international friendly against the world champions.

Speaking to Omroep West Sport, Nikiema explained that the team’s departure was postponed three times, leaving the players with little time to recover before the scheduled match against Argentina.

“The reason is that our flight was postponed three times. We had played against the Central African Republic on Monday and were supposed to face Argentina on Saturday,” the goalkeeper explained.

Burkina Faso had initially planned to leave on Monday evening. However, the departure was pushed back until Friday night or Saturday morning, meaning the squad would have arrived in Argentina on the day of the match.

The revised travel arrangements raised concerns about the physical demands of the journey, which was expected to last around 14 hours, and the limited time available for recovery before facing Argentina.

Nikiema said the players ultimately agreed that travelling under those conditions could expose them to unnecessary injury risks.

Players concerned about fitness

The goalkeeper clarified that the decision was made collectively by the players after the repeated changes to their travel schedule.

With Burkina Faso having played against the Central African Republic on Monday, the squad faced the prospect of travelling across continents before taking on Argentina just days later.

The delays left the players with little opportunity to rest and prepare properly for the friendly, prompting concerns about their readiness for the match.

Nikiema also acknowledged that the Burkina Faso Football Federation had cited technical problems with the flight arrangements.

Although the cancellation meant the Stallions would miss the opportunity to face Argentina, the goalkeeper’s explanation centred on the practical difficulties created by the disrupted travel plans and the potential consequences for the players.

Missed opportunity for Burkina Faso’s young players

The proposed friendly against Argentina was also an opportunity for Burkina Faso’s under-23 players to test themselves against one of international football’s leading sides.

Nikiema recognised the importance of the fixture for the younger members of the squad, who could have gained valuable experience from facing such opposition.

However, the difficult travel arrangements complicated preparations for the match and ultimately contributed to the decision not to make the trip.

The cancellation brought an end to plans for the encounter, with the players’ concerns about their physical condition forming a key part of the explanation given by the goalkeeper.

For Burkina Faso, the situation highlighted the challenges of arranging international fixtures when travel schedules change repeatedly and recovery time becomes limited.

Nikiema’s comments provide further insight into why the Stallions decided against travelling, pointing to the three flight postponements, the expected 14-hour journey and the risk of arriving without adequate time to recover before the scheduled match.
