Orlando Pirates face Mamelodi Sundowns in MTN8 final with title defence at stake
Orlando Pirates will put their MTN8 title on the line against Mamelodi Sundowns at Moses Mabhida Stadium this afternoon, as South Africa’s leading domestic rivals meet in the first major cup final of the season.
The Buccaneers are aiming to retain the trophy, while the final offers another significant contest between two of the country’s most successful teams in recent seasons.
The match also brings together the top two sides in the Betway Premiership. Sundowns begin the weekend at the summit, with Pirates just behind them and having played one match fewer.
That league position will have no bearing on the outcome in Durban, where a trophy will be decided over one game.
Pirates arrive in strong form
Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side return from the FIFA international break having won their past five Premiership matches.
Pirates recorded emphatic victories over Kruger United and Durban City before ending their run-up to the final with a 2-0 win against Marumo Gallants.
The sequence has strengthened their title challenge, but Sundowns present a different test. Pirates will need to preserve their recent attacking purpose while showing the control and defensive discipline demanded by a cup final.
Possession management, defensive transitions and the handling of decisive moments are likely to be important against opponents capable of punishing errors.
Both clubs have used the international break to prepare for the fixture. The condition and availability of players returning from international duty will be among the factors considered before the final starting teams are confirmed.
Ouaddou has selection decisions to make
Pirates have received encouraging news regarding several injured players, with a number of them travelling with the squad to Durban.
Their inclusion in the travelling party gives Ouaddou more choices, although it does not guarantee that any of them will be selected. Possible returns from injury could influence the manager’s decisions in midfield and attack.
Sipho Chaine is expected to start in goal, with Nkosinathi Sibisi and Lebone Seema likely to operate at centre-back. Deon Hotto and Kamogelo Sebelebele are the projected full-backs.
Oswin Appollis and Tshepang Moremi could provide width in the front three, with Yanela Mbuthuma leading the attack. Thapelo Mokobodi, Simphiwe Selepe and Gamphani Lungu are expected to supply energy and movement through midfield and the final third.
Recent league results will count for little once the final begins. Pirates must turn their momentum into a performance against Sundowns if they are to claim another major honour.
