The fixture comes one week before the start of Ligue 1 2026-2027, which begins on 21 August. It will therefore be the first competitive match of the new season for both sides, with silverware available from the outset.

For Paris Saint-Germain, the game offers an opportunity to begin the campaign strongly and reinforce their position as the leading force in French football. PSG have considerable experience in the Trophee des Champions and will be seeking to add another honour to their trophy cabinet.

Lens, meanwhile, have the chance to win a major title in front of their own supporters at Bollaert. The stadium is expected to be particularly passionate for the occasion, giving the Racing a significant advantage as they attempt to claim the trophy.

Contrasting pre-season preparations

Lens played five friendly matches during their preparations. They won the Como Cup after beating Villarreal 3-1 in the final, a result that highlighted their attacking promise and their ability to respond after falling behind.

However, the Sang et Or ended their pre-season with a 2-0 defeat by Sunderland at Bollaert on 8 August. The result represented a setback so close to the meeting with PSG. Lens struggled to create danger and lacked efficiency in the final third.

Paris Saint-Germain arrive in much greater confidence. Their most important recent result was a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa on 12 August, which secured the UEFA Super Cup. PSG had fallen behind in that match but turned it around through goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue.

While Lens finished their preparations with defeat, PSG have already begun their competitive schedule with a win and a trophy. That success suggests Luis Enrique’s side have quickly rediscovered their competitive intensity.

Fitness concerns

Odsonne Edouard is the main doubt for Lens after going off injured during the defeat by Sunderland. The striker has an adductor injury and his availability for the match remains uncertain.

Jonathan Gradit and Deiver Machado are also among the players whose fitness is being monitored, according to the latest information from the Lens medical department.

PSG have a considerably stronger squad on paper, although their physical recovery will be worth watching after the UEFA Super Cup against Aston Villa on 12 August. Desire Doue was particularly influential in that 2-1 victory.

The recent head-to-head record also favours Paris. Across the past 20 meetings, PSG have won 12 times, Lens have won twice and six matches have ended in draws. Paris have scored 37 goals in those games, compared with 16 for Lens.

PSG are also on a run of five consecutive victories over Lens. Several prediction models give Paris about a 53% chance of winning, compared with roughly 23% for the hosts.

A PSG victory is therefore viewed as the safer selection, although the home crowd at Bollaert makes an outright away win a less certain proposition. Betting prices can change.
