Ryan Kavuma-McQueen begins Portsmouth chapter after Chelsea academy rise

England-Uganda winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen has joined Portsmouth from Chelsea U21 on loan, giving the Championship club a 17-year-old right-sided attacker for the 2026-27 season.

The move was completed on 14 August 2026, with Kavuma-McQueen’s loan scheduled to run until 31 May 2027. He will return to Chelsea U21 at the end of the agreement.

Kavuma-McQueen, who was born in London, is a left-footed right winger and has represented both England and Uganda at nationality level. He joined Chelsea’s youth system in July 2024 before progressing to the club’s Under-18 side and then Chelsea U21 a year later.

His most productive campaign came during the 2025-26 season, when he helped Chelsea U18 win the English Youth League. He scored seven goals and provided three assists in 17 U18 Premier League appearances, while also registering six goals and four assists in 16 Premier League 2 matches.

The teenager also scored four times in five FA Youth Cup appearances, found the net twice in the U18 Premier League final and added goals in the Premier League International Cup, Premier League Cup and Premier League 2 play-offs. He made his senior-level involvement during the campaign with appearances in the FA Cup and EFL Trophy.

Kavuma-McQueen’s move places him in Portsmouth’s first-team environment after his recent experience in Chelsea’s development structure. Portsmouth compete in the Championship, while Chelsea U21 play in Premier League 2, marking a change in the level and setting of his regular football.

The winger’s pathway at Chelsea has included three stages: Chelsea Youth, Chelsea U18 and Chelsea U21. His record across the youth competitions listed for the recent period includes 34 appearances, 18 goals and eight assists in the U18 Premier League and Premier League 2, alongside his cup contributions.

Portsmouth have taken Kavuma-McQueen for the season-long loan from Chelsea U21, with no transfer fee stated. The completed move was registered on 14 August 2026.
