Kaizer Chiefs hit by eight-man injury blow ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns showdown

Kaizer Chiefs will be without eight top players when they host Mamelodi Sundowns in a heavyweight South African league clash at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

The Amakhosi have made a solid start and have looked well organised across the pitch, but their depth will be severely tested against the reigning giants of South African football.

Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz confirmed on Thursday that the club will again be without a significant group of players for the high-profile encounter, with injuries and a lack of match fitness keeping them out of contention.

The French coach, speaking to the media at Naturena, revealed that the situation has not changed significantly from the team’s previous match and suggested there is only a slim chance of one additional player returning to the squad.

“It will be the same players because the time is too short,” Da Cruz told the media.

“These players will be out of the squad, we also have one who we’re doubtful about,” he added.

Eight stars ruled out

The confirmed absentees leave Chiefs without several players who could have strengthened Da Cruz’s options against Sundowns.

Ethan Chislett, Flavio Da Silva, Bradley Cross and Paseka Mako are among the players who will miss the encounter.

Nkanyiso Shinga, Rushwin Dortley, Faiz Abrahams and Khanyisa Mayo complete the list of eight players ruled out of the showdown.

Their absence could force Da Cruz to rely heavily on the players who have remained fit and available, particularly with Sundowns expected to provide one of the toughest tests of the campaign.

The Chiefs boss did not reveal the identity of the one doubtful player who could potentially return to the matchday squad.

That decision is expected to be made after a late assessment of the player’s fitness, leaving the door open for a possible boost before kick-off.
