Benfica add Fikayo Tomori to shortlist as salary concerns emerge

Benfica have added Fikayo Tomori to their shortlist of centre-back targets following the departure of António Silva, but the England international’s salary demands could complicate a potential move to the Estádio da Luz.

According to Glorioso 1904, Benfica have requested information on the 28-year-old AC Milan defender as they begin assessing alternatives for their defence. The Portuguese giants are understood to have made initial contact with Tomori’s representatives in recent days to establish his contractual expectations.

However, his wages have emerged as an early obstacle, with Benfica reportedly concerned that his current financial demands could prove too expensive for the club.

Amorim reportedly wants Tomori out

Tomori’s situation at Milan has also fuelled speculation over his future, with Ruben Amorim reportedly advising the defender to look for a new club.

The former Chelsea academy product has spent several years in Italy after joining Milan in 2021 and has established himself as an experienced defender at both domestic and European level.

A return to England could therefore become an attractive alternative if Benfica are unable to reach an agreement over his salary.

Benfica consider several defensive options

Tomori is not the only defender under consideration as Benfica look to strengthen the position.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis of Southampton and Chelsea’s Tosin Adarabioyo have also been linked with the Portuguese club as potential additions to Marco Silva’s back line.

Benfica president Rui Costa has already confirmed the club’s intention to reinforce the centre-back position, increasing the likelihood of further activity before the transfer window closes.

For Tomori, however, competition for his signature could make negotiations even more difficult. His experience in the Premier League and familiarity with English football could encourage interest from clubs in his homeland, potentially giving him options beyond Benfica.
