Cristian Romero set for Atletico Madrid medical after €40m Tottenham agreement

Argentina defender Cristian Romero has travelled to Madrid with his agent to complete his move from Tottenham to Atletico Madrid, with a medical scheduled for Friday.

The 28-year-old was given permission by Tottenham to make the journey on Thursday night, according to Italian transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano. Romero is expected to undergo medical tests with Atletico before finalising the transfer.

The deal is worth 40m euros, including add-ons, while Tottenham will retain 15% of the fee from any future sale of the player.

Atletico have reached an agreement with Tottenham to sign Romero, who has been identified as one of the main targets of manager Diego Simeone as he looks to strengthen his defence.

Reports in Spain suggest Romero will sign a contract with the Madrid club running until 2031, provided he passes the medical.

Romero joined Tottenham from Italian club Atalanta in 2021 and subsequently became captain of the north London side. He also played a part in Tottenham’s Europa League triumph in 2025.

The defender has been an important member of the Argentina squad during a highly successful period for the national team. He helped them win the Copa America in 2021 and 2024, as well as the 2022 World Cup.

His departure would bring an end to his time at Tottenham after five years with the club. Romero’s move to Atletico is now dependent on the completion of the medical examination and the formal signing of his long-term contract.

The agreement includes a significant future-sale arrangement for Tottenham, who would be entitled to 15% of any amount Atletico receive if Romero is transferred again.

Romero’s imminent move reunites him with Simeone’s Atletico project in La Liga, after the Spanish club made the Argentina international a priority target for the summer transfer window. The medical in Madrid represents the next formal step before the transfer can be completed.
