Real Madrid set to reveal new Santiago Bernabeu identity as stadium makeover advances
Real Madrid are continuing the transformation of the Santiago Bernabeu with work under way on a new display of the stadium’s commercial name and club crest on the facade facing Castellana.
The structure will be backlit to improve its visibility after sunset, allowing the identity of the stadium to be seen clearly from outside. The feature is intended to restore the prominence the ground’s name previously had for people approaching it from the surrounding streets.
According to Marca, Real Madrid carried out tests last summer on the letter “B” from the name that will be displayed. The club used those trials to assess the most suitable size and typeface, examining how the design looked from outside the stadium and from different viewing angles.
Construction resumed a week ago, with workers now installing the framework that will support the lettering and crest. The work could not begin earlier because construction was taking place on the lower gates on the same side of the stadium.
Regulations prevent simultaneous work in the same area at different heights, meaning the installation of the new structure had to wait until the earlier operation had progressed sufficiently.
Inside the stadium, tests have also been carried out on an LED sign in the second tier. Installation of that feature began at the end of last season and it is expected to be ready for Real Madrid’s opening league fixture at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The stadium has undergone continuous development since it reopened, with the club still refining several details aimed at strengthening its position as one of football’s leading venues. The latest work forms part of that ongoing process rather than representing a single completed redevelopment project.
Possible new feature near the Bernabeu Market
Marca says the most eye-catching addition could still be located away from the main facade.
Real Madrid are considering installing a metal structure in Plaza de los Sagrados Corazones, the small square that is home to the Bernabeu Market. The proposed design would match the appearance of the stadium and carry both the name of the ground and the Real Madrid crest.
The square is one of the areas most frequently visited by supporters who want to take photographs near the stadium. A large, recognisable feature there would therefore provide another prominent backdrop for fans and could make the location even more attractive to the crowds who visit the Santiago Bernabeu each day.
No final decision on that additional structure has been stated, but it is being examined as part of the club’s plans to improve the experience around the stadium as well as inside it.
The illuminated lettering on the Castellana side is now moving into the construction phase, while the LED sign and the possible Plaza de los Sagrados Corazones feature underline the extent to which Real Madrid continue to develop the Santiago Bernabeu beyond the main structural works.
