Jules Kounde rejects transfer interest as Barcelona stay could bring historic record

Jules Kounde has no intention of leaving Barcelona this summer despite interest from several of Europe’s leading clubs, according to Spanish newspaper Marca.

The France defender remains committed to continuing his career at the Catalan club after extending his contract last year until the summer of 2030. That decision reflected his desire to remain part of Hansi Flick’s plans at Barcelona.

The club’s hierarchy is aware of Kounde’s position and does not currently expect him to depart during this transfer window. The 27-year-old has made his preference clear on several occasions, while his agent has delivered the same message to Barcelona officials.

Kounde is being monitored by a number of major European clubs, with his name reportedly included on the recruitment lists of Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham. However, none of those clubs has made a formal offer so far.

Reports in England have suggested Tottenham could be prepared to propose a fee of up to €65m for the defender. That figure, though, has not yet resulted in an official approach.

Barcelona’s sporting department is not understood to be particularly concerned about Kounde’s future while the player remains determined to stay. The club would only be likely to reconsider its position if an exceptional offer arrived, especially given that Kounde’s response has remained consistent whenever he has been asked about the possibility of a move: he does not want to leave Barcelona.

Even so, sporting director Deco and Flick recognise that the transfer market can produce unexpected developments in the coming days. Barcelona have therefore not completely ruled out every possible outcome, although Kounde’s position appears decisive at present.

The defender’s desire to remain at Barcelona is not based solely on personal preference. He has become a key member of Flick’s side and is trusted by the coaching staff.

Kounde joined Barcelona from Sevilla in 2022 and has made 188 appearances for the club. That figure already places him among the most frequently selected French players in Barcelona’s history.

He is now only five matches away from matching the record held by his fellow Frenchman Eric Abidal, who leads the club’s list of French appearances with 193.

Kounde has a strong opportunity to move to the top of that ranking in the near future. He has already overtaken several prominent French players who have represented Barcelona, including Ousmane Dembele, who made 185 appearances.

He also has more Barcelona appearances than Clement Lenglet, who played 160 times for the club, and Samuel Umtiti, who featured in 134 matches.

Remaining at Barcelona would therefore represent more than Kounde turning down interest from leading European clubs. Continuing in Catalonia could soon allow him to become the French player with the most appearances in the club’s history, adding another significant achievement to his career with Barcelona.
