Ramy Bensebaïni set to remain at Dortmund despite transfer interest

Algerian defender Ramy Bensebaïni is expected to remain at Borussia Dortmund this summer despite reported interest from several clubs, with the 31-year-old continuing to hold an important role in the club’s defensive plans.

Bensebaïni and Dortmund are understood to share the same intention of continuing their partnership for at least another season, despite the defender’s contract running until June 2027.

The latest reports from Germany suggest that the 2026 World Cup qualifier remains a significant part of Dortmund’s defensive rotation.

Bensebaïni is among four main options for central defence alongside Nico Schlotterbeck, Joane Gadou and Waldemar Anton, with young defender Filippo Mané currently behind them in the pecking order.

His ability to operate in more than one defensive position is also highly valued by Dortmund. In addition to playing centrally, Bensebaïni can cover the left side of the defence, giving the club further flexibility.

That position within the squad makes a move away from Dortmund during the current transfer window increasingly unlikely.

Bensebaïni had been linked with potential moves to Galatasaray and Paris Saint-Germain during the summer as speculation surrounded his future.

However, the possibility of a move to PSG has since disappeared following the French club’s official signing of Lucas Digne from Aston Villa.

With Dortmund continuing to view Bensebaïni as an important defensive option, the Algerian is now expected to remain at the club rather than seek a move elsewhere.

The defender’s performances last season also contributed to his continued importance within the squad.

Bensebaïni made 32 appearances in all competitions, scoring seven goals and providing three assists.

His campaign was interrupted by periods on the sidelines. He was unavailable for 58 days in total, with 50 of those days attributed to back and ankle problems.

Those injuries resulted in Bensebaïni missing nine matches during the season.

Despite those absences, his contribution in the attacking third and his experience have strengthened his position within Dortmund’s plans.

The Algerian’s ability to contribute goals and assists while providing defensive versatility has kept him in contention for regular involvement.

With his contract still running until June 2027 and Dortmund reportedly keen to retain him, the current indications point towards Bensebaïni staying in Germany.

The summer speculation surrounding the defender therefore appears to be losing momentum, particularly after PSG ended its interest by signing Digne.

For now, Bensebaïni is expected to continue with Dortmund, where his experience and versatility remain important components of the club’s defensive options.
