Kaizer Chiefs hold talks after shock MTN8 quarter-final exit

Kaizer Chiefs held internal discussions after their surprise MTN8 quarter-final defeat by Lamontville Golden Arrows, defender Reeve Frosler has revealed, as the club seek an immediate response in the Betway Premiership.

The Amakhosi were beaten 1-0 by Lamontville Golden Arrows at FNB Stadium on Sunday evening, 9 August 2026. Khulekani Shezi scored the decisive goal in the second half to send Chiefs out of the competition.

Frosler said the squad met after the match to examine their performance, discuss the mistakes that led to the defeat and identify the areas that require urgent improvement.

The result extends Chiefs’ difficult wait for silverware in a competition they have historically dominated. The Soweto club are record 15-time winners of the MTN8, but their most recent triumph came in 2014, when they defeated arch-rivals Orlando Pirates 1-0.

The early elimination has increased the pressure on Fernando da Cruz’s side, who must now focus on the league and attempt to recover quickly from their cup disappointment.

“Losing the MTN8 game was not ideal, but we’ve got to pick ourselves up and go on to the next one,” Frosler told the club’s media.

Chiefs’ next opportunity to respond comes against Sekhukhune United in the Betway Premiership. The fixture will see them face a team led by former Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze.

“We’ve got Sekhukhune next, which gives us another chance to go and do what we need to do and try to get a positive result,” Frosler said.

He added: “We have discussed where we need to improve, and we are motivated as a team to perform at our best and take the three points.”

Chiefs target league reaction

Chiefs will host Sekhukhune United at FNB Stadium on Wednesday night, with kick-off scheduled for 19:30.

The match gives Da Cruz’s team a chance to put the MTN8 defeat behind them and restore momentum in domestic competition. Frosler said the players remained determined to improve collectively and produce the response required after their disappointing exit.

For Chiefs, the fixture is also an important test of whether the squad can deal with the pressure created by another season without a recent MTN8 triumph. Their 2014 victory remains the club’s last success in the tournament, despite their record tally of 15 titles.

Lamontville Golden Arrows’ victory, secured by Shezi’s second-half strike, ended Chiefs’ involvement in the competition at the quarter-final stage and left the Amakhosi with the Betway Premiership as their immediate route to recovery.

Sekhukhune United, under Kaze, will provide the opposition at a stadium where Chiefs will be expected to respond in front of their supporters. Frosler said the players had already addressed the problems exposed in the loss and were focused on claiming all three points.
