Jody February’s Mamelodi Sundowns future in doubt as loan exit looms

Mamelodi Sundowns are exploring a loan move for goalkeeper Jody February as the 30-year-old looks to secure regular playing time away from the club this season.

February has returned to Sundowns after spending last season on loan at AmaZulu, but his prospects of featuring regularly remain uncertain. The goalkeeper found opportunities difficult to come by at the DStv Premiership champions and could now leave again temporarily in search of consistent first-team football.

His agent, Mike Makaab, has confirmed that discussions are ongoing, although no agreement has been reached regarding February’s next destination.

“At the moment, nothing is final in terms of February’s future at Mamelodi Sundowns, as I said we are still looking at options for a loan move.”

The situation has become more complicated following the return of Ricardo Goss, who has spent the past two seasons away from Sundowns on loan at Siwelele FC, formerly SuperSport United.

Goss return pushes February further down pecking order

Goss, who is Bafana Bafana’s second-choice goalkeeper, is now back at Chloorkop and expected to compete with Ronwen Williams for the starting position under head coach Miguel Cardoso.

His return has further reduced February’s chances of breaking into the Sundowns side after he already spent much of last season behind Williams and veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango in the pecking order.

With Goss now back in the squad, February faces an uphill battle to secure meaningful minutes unless Sundowns decide to loan him out.

Makaab says the priority is to find a situation where the goalkeeper can play regularly and rebuild his form.

“Look for Ricardo Goss; we are looking at loan opportunities for him to get game-time and get back to the best form that we all know,” Makaab told FARPost.

The agent’s comments underline the club’s willingness to consider temporary moves for its goalkeepers as Sundowns manage competition for places between the posts.

February desperate to get back on the pitch

For February, the immediate objective is clear: playing time.

The goalkeeper has struggled to establish himself as Sundowns’ first-choice option since joining the club and spent the previous campaign away at AmaZulu in an attempt to gain regular competitive action.

A further loan could provide him with another opportunity to play consistently and demonstrate that he remains capable of competing at the highest level.

At 30, February is at an important stage of his career and will be eager to avoid another season largely confined to the bench.

With Williams firmly established as Sundowns’ leading goalkeeper and Goss now back in the squad, a temporary departure could offer February the clearest route to regular football.
