Gladwin Shitolo joins University of Pretoria on one-year contract

Gladwin Shitolo has signed a one-year contract with Motsepe Foundation Championship club University of Pretoria after a period of training with the Pretoria-based side, according to information gathered by the Siya crew.

The 37-year-old midfielder had been working with the squad to maintain his fitness while waiting for his next professional opportunity. That arrangement has now led to a permanent move, with Shitolo joining the team coached by Michael Loftman.

Shitolo became available after leaving Abafana Bes’thende, where he made seven appearances in the Betway Premiership last season. He had previously been reported to be training with University of Pretoria, also known as Tuks, following his departure from the KwaZulu-Natal club.

His time with Tuks was initially understood to be focused on keeping match-fit rather than securing a contract. However, his experience and continued involvement with the team have resulted in the two parties agreeing a deal.

The transfer allows University of Pretoria to add an experienced midfielder without paying a transfer fee, while Shitolo prolongs his professional career by moving into South Africa’s second tier.

Shitolo has spent much of his career competing in the top flight and began his senior journey with Jomo Cosmos in 2009. He made 71 appearances for the club during a five-year spell before moving to Orlando Pirates in 2014.

His time with the Buccaneers produced 32 appearances. He subsequently had loan spells with Platinum Stars and Chippa United before eventually establishing himself at Golden Arrows.

Shitolo joined Golden Arrows permanently in 2022 and became a dependable member of the squad. Across three seasons with the KwaZulu-Natal outfit, he featured in 72 matches and scored two goals.

Although his latest move represents a step down from the top-flight level, his experience in the PSL could be important for Loftman’s team. Established professionals can play a significant role in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, particularly during closely contested promotion campaigns.

For University of Pretoria, the signing provides additional depth and leadership in midfield. For Shitolo, it offers the opportunity to continue playing competitively after his departure from Abafana Bes’thende.

The main challenge for the midfielder will be adjusting to the demands of second-tier football after spending the majority of his career in the top flight. His knowledge of the professional game, however, gives Tuks a player capable of providing valuable experience as they pursue their objectives in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
