Burkinabe-born defender Ismaël Ganiou extends RC Lens stay
RC Lens have secured the long-term future of Ismaël Ganiou after the young defender signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2030.
The 21-year-old French Under-21 international, who is of Burkinabe origin, has been rewarded for his rapid development after establishing himself within the Lens first-team setup.
The defender has already experienced significant success with his boyhood club, including finishing as a French league runner-up and winning the Coupe de France.
Ganiou first came into the first-team picture at a very young age. His initial call-up came in September 2022 for a Ligue 1 away match against Nantes, when he was only 17.
The central defender continued his development with Lens and took an important step forward during the 2023/24 campaign.
Under Vincent Carlier, he became an important member of the side and played a key role in the Lens team that progressed to the last 16 of the UEFA Youth League.
His development continued after returning to RC Lens in the summer of 2025 following a loan spell. The player quickly emerged as one of the club’s notable performers during the season.
Ganiou’s progress was not without difficulties. His early spell at Auxerre included a red card, but he responded positively and gradually worked his way into Pierre Sage’s starting line-up.
The defender subsequently produced a series of impressive performances, including a decisive goal against Strasbourg on his debut at Bollaert. He then found the net again against Toulouse as his influence within the team continued to grow.
His performances were recognised with two Ligue 1 “Young Talent of the Month” awards, further underlining the progress he had made during the campaign.
Ganiou’s qualities have made him an increasingly important figure for Lens. His pace, strength and defensive ability have helped him establish himself as one of the club’s promising young players.
The new contract represents a significant commitment from both player and club. By extending his agreement through to 2030, Lens have ensured that one of their emerging defensive talents will remain part of their project for the long term.
For Ganiou, the deal provides recognition for a rapid rise that began with his first-team opportunity as a teenager and has continued through his development with the Lens academy and senior side.
The contract extension also rewards a player who has responded strongly to setbacks and taken advantage of his opportunities when they arrived.
After progressing through the club’s youth system and making his mark at senior level, Ganiou has now committed his future to RC Lens until 2030.
