Sabah FK secure historic Champions League win with three Africans starting

Sabah FK recorded the first Champions League victory in the club’s history by beating Slavia Prague 2-0 on matchday two of the league phase.

The landmark result was achieved with three African players in the starting line-up, and each completed the full 90 minutes. Their contributions helped Sabah FK keep a clean sheet and secure a memorable European success.

Zedadka brings experience

Algerian right-back Akim Zedadka, 31, was selected from the start for the match. He remained on the pitch throughout and delivered a disciplined performance on the right side of the defence.

His experience helped Sabah FK maintain their organisation as they restricted Slavia Prague and ensured the Czech side failed to score.

McCarthy helps secure clean sheet

South African defender Aden McCarthy also began the game and stayed on until the final whistle. The 22-year-old played his part in a solid defensive display as Sabah FK protected their lead.

The result marked an important stage in McCarthy’s development, with Slavia Prague unable to find a way through during the match.

Mickels seals victory late on

Rwandan left winger Joy-Lance Mickels, 32, completed the scoring in the 88th minute. Having played the entire match, he struck late to confirm Sabah FK’s first win in the competition.

Mickels’ goal gave the result a decisive finish and ensured there was no late response from Slavia Prague.

The 2-0 victory gives Sabah FK a historic moment to celebrate in the Champions League. It also underlined the role played by Zedadka, McCarthy and Mickels, with all three Africans starting and completing the match as the club claimed its first success in the competition.
