Nigeria’s Flying Eagles miss out on 2027 U-20 AFCON qualification

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have suffered a major setback in their bid to qualify for the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations after they were thrashed 4-1 by Burkina Faso in the final of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship on Sunday.

The defeat means Nigeria, the defending champions, have surrendered their regional crown and missed out on the automatic qualification route to next year’s U-20 AFCON in Ghana. The Flying Eagles had entered the competition as two-time defending champions but were left stunned by a devastating opening spell from the Young Stallions.

Burkina Faso tear Nigeria apart

Burkina Faso needed only four minutes to take control when Alassana Bagayogo opened the scoring. Loukman Asharaf Tapsoba doubled the advantage just a minute later, leaving Nigeria with a mountain to climb almost immediately.

The Young Stallions exploited Nigeria’s defensive problems again in the 15th minute, with Issouf Dabo making it 3-0 and putting Burkina Faso firmly in command.

Nigeria, coached by Abdu Maikaba, struggled to match Burkina Faso’s intensity and entered the interval three goals behind.

The Flying Eagles attempted to revive their hopes after the break and reduced the deficit through Abdulmuiz Adeleke in the 53rd minute. However, the goal failed to trigger the comeback Nigeria desperately needed.

Burkina Faso remained composed and continued to frustrate their opponents before Fadil Barro delivered the decisive blow in the fifth minute of added time.

His goal completed a 4-1 victory and confirmed Burkina Faso as WAFU B champions, while Nigeria were left to contemplate one of their most disappointing results at youth level.

Nigeria’s AFCON hopes dashed

The defeat carries consequences beyond losing the regional final. With the WAFU B Championship serving as the qualifying pathway for the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, Nigeria’s failure to win the competition has cost them an automatic ticket to Ghana.

That represents a significant blow for a country that has traditionally been one of Africa’s strongest forces in youth football.

For Maikaba and his players, the collapse against Burkina Faso will be particularly difficult to digest after Nigeria had targeted another regional title and a place at next year’s continental showpiece.

Instead, the Flying Eagles leave the competition empty-handed, with their hopes of appearing at the 2027 U-20 AFCON now extinguished.
