Asil Osama wins historic javelin gold for Egypt at World Athletics U20 Championships

Egyptian athlete Asil Osama has won a historic gold medal in the women’s javelin at the World Athletics U20 Championships in the United States.

The 18-year-old produced a throw of 59.82 metres to finish first and claim the title, becoming the first female medallist in the history of the championships and the first athlete to win a javelin medal at the event.

Croatia’s Vita Barbic took silver after recording 56.60m, while Taiwan’s Tai Yu Chen secured the bronze medal with a throw of 54.27m.

Osama’s victory marks a significant achievement for Egyptian athletics at the global under-20 competition, which is being staged in the United States.

Her performance adds to a remarkable year for the young thrower. Earlier in 2026, Osama won the African women’s title with a throw of 60.97m, achieving that success at only 18 years of age.

That mark also underlines her potential at senior level. Had her 60.97m throw been recorded at the latest Olympic Games in Paris, it would have placed her 12th in the final standings of the senior women’s javelin competition.

Osama will now begin preparations for the World Athletics Championships next year in China, where she is expected to compete against the leading senior athletes in the discipline.

Her gold medal in the United States provides the latest landmark in a rapid rise that has already seen her win a continental title and establish herself among the leading young javelin throwers.
