Golden Arrows knock Kaizer Chiefs out of MTN8 in FNB Stadium shock

Golden Arrows produced the first major upset of the MTN8 quarter-finals by beating Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 at FNB Stadium on Sunday evening.

The result ended Chiefs’ hopes of joining Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Sekhukhune United in the semi-finals, after the other three sides had all progressed with victories that required extra time.

Chiefs had gone into the match with confidence following their 3-1 win over Kruger United in their opening game of the season last week. They appeared well placed to continue that momentum as they controlled possession and territory for long periods, particularly before half-time.

However, Kaizer Chiefs were unable to turn their dominance into a goal. Lebo Maboe, Luke Baartman and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo all missed good opportunities inside the penalty area as the home side applied sustained pressure to the visitors.

Golden Arrows offered occasional reminders of their technical quality and attacking pace on the counter-attack, although last season’s Golden Boot winner Junior Dion received little service in the final third.

The intensity of Kaizer Chiefs’ play made it difficult for Pitso Dladla’s side to establish any rhythm. Golden Arrows were largely focused on containing their opponents rather than imposing themselves on the match, with the Glamour Boys spending much of the first half in the ascendancy.

Despite Chiefs’ control and attacking threat, the teams went into the interval level at 0-0. With the other three quarter-finals having gone into extra time, another prolonged finish appeared possible.

Instead, Golden Arrows struck early in the second half and silenced the home crowd. Khulekani Shezi opened the scoring against the run of play with a cross-cum-shot that caught Brandon Petersen off guard and beat the goalkeeper at his near post.

Chiefs responded by committing more players forward in search of an equaliser. Fernando da Cruz attempted to change the game from the bench, introducing Langelihle Phili for his debut.

Etiosa Ighodaro also came on around the hour mark, replacing Ngcobo, while Wandile Duba was withdrawn at the same time. The changes reflected Chiefs’ determination to recover from the setback, but Golden Arrows held on to their advantage and secured a place in the last four.

Their victory completed a notable weekend for the semi-finalists. Orlando Pirates defeated Durban City, Mamelodi Sundowns overcame Polokwane City and Sekhukhune United beat AmaZulu, with each of those matches being decided in extra time.

The MTN8 result also represents a significant disappointment for Kaizer Chiefs, who had hoped their strong start under Da Cruz would carry them through the competition. Instead, Golden Arrows’ defensive resilience and Shezi’s unexpected finish were enough to settle the tie at FNB Stadium.
