Liverpool beaten by Monaco in five-goal friendly at Anfield

Liverpool were defeated 3-2 by Monaco in a pre-season friendly at Anfield as both sides continued their preparations for the 2026-27 campaign.

Alexander Isak gave Liverpool the lead after 16 minutes, finishing powerfully from inside the penalty area after Ryan Gravenberch had supplied the pass.

The home side doubled their advantage in the 29th minute through Florian Wirtz. The Germany international followed up after Monaco’s goalkeeper had saved Isak’s header, turning the rebound into the net.

Despite Liverpool’s control of the opening stages, Monaco reduced the deficit before half-time. Aleksandr Golovin converted from the penalty spot to give the visitors a route back into the match.

Monaco completed the comeback 11 minutes into the second half. Mike Biereth scored in the 56th minute after following up on a one-on-one opportunity that had been saved by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Liverpool introduced new signing Victor Munoz as a substitute during the second half, but it was Monaco who found the decisive goal late on.

Paris Brunner headed Monaco in front in the 88th minute, meeting a corner delivered by Anis Souber to complete the French side’s turnaround.

The result was Liverpool’s latest warm-up fixture ahead of the new season, with the match played at Anfield as part of their preparations for 2026-27. Liverpool had moved into a two-goal lead through Isak and Wirtz, but Monaco’s response ensured the visitors left with victory.

Liverpool will play their final friendly before the start of the season against Como on Sunday, 16 August. Monaco’s next pre-season fixture will be against Coventry on Friday.

The meeting with Como will bring Liverpool’s friendly schedule to a close, while Monaco will continue their preparations with the game against Coventry.
