Omar Marmoush’s Manchester City future is in his own hands, says Maresca

Enzo Maresca says Omar Marmoush will have a major say in deciding his Manchester City future, while confirming that Rodri is expected to return to Manchester on Wednesday.

Marmoush’s position was discussed after he scored twice in Manchester City’s 3-1 friendly victory over Atletico de Madrid as the club continued its preparations for the new season.

Asked about the Egypt international’s situation, Maresca said: “The answer should be similar to the one I gave regarding James Trafford. The players train every day and want to play, so when they do not play, they are not happy.”

He added: “Omar did not play much last season, so it is normal that his desire is to get more playing time.”

Maresca continued: “That does not mean that he will not get more minutes with us, but the decision is also up to him, and we have to fully understand his decision and the details behind it.”

Marmoush was named in the starting line-up against Atletico and played until the 78th minute, when he was replaced by Algeria international Rayan Ait-Nouri.

Atletico took the lead shortly before half-time through 16-year-old Jorge Dominguez, but Marmoush turned the match around after the interval with two goals in the space of two minutes.

The Egyptian scored in the 57th and 59th minutes, with both goals coming in almost identical fashion. On each occasion, he converted a cross from Antoine Semenyo.

The forward had only returned to Manchester City training a few days earlier after taking a break following his involvement with Egypt at the World Cup. He had previously appeared as a substitute in the club’s friendly against the Korean league all-stars.

Marmoush’s performance came as speculation continues over his future, with Maresca making clear that the player’s desire for regular football will be an important factor in any decision.

Rodri return

Maresca also provided an update on Rodri, who has been linked with a move to Barcelona. Negotiations between the Catalan club and Manchester City are still ongoing.

Asked when Rodri would return to training, Maresca said: “At the moment, Rodri will return to Manchester on Wednesday, and as of now he is still a Manchester City player.”

Manchester City will face Arsenal in the FA Community Shield next Sunday as part of their build-up to the new campaign.

The club will then begin its Premier League season at home to Bournemouth on Sunday, 23 August, at the Etihad Stadium.
