Ruben Amorim says Milan will finalise squad after Chelsea defeat

Milan manager Ruben Amorim says the club will make decisions about their squad next week after a 3-0 friendly defeat by Chelsea.

Amorim said Milan currently have too many players and will need to select those who remain with the team as preparations continue for the new Serie A season.

“We knew we would suffer in this match, but we wanted to test the players,” Amorim told Sky Sport Italia after the defeat.

Milan were beaten without scoring as Chelsea secured a three-goal victory in a pre-season fixture designed to help both sides prepare for the campaign ahead.

Amorim said his players had shown they could defend together and apply pressure effectively, but warned that such an approach would not always be suitable against opponents of Chelsea’s quality.

“The players know how to defend as one team and press well, but against a team like Chelsea we will not always play in this way,” he said.

The Portuguese manager added that the primary objective of the preparation period was to ensure Milan were ready for their opening competitive match and to build confidence within the squad.

“We are here to prepare for the start of the season. We want to win our first official match and give the players confidence,” he said.

Amorim also highlighted the number of young players in the group, explaining that their involvement was part of a wider process to prepare them for the demands of competitive football.

“The team has a large number of young players, and this is part of the process of getting them ready for official matches,” he said.

The manager acknowledged that Milan’s squad is currently large, making a series of decisions necessary before the season begins.

“The preparation period has been extremely positive, but we have a large number of players, so we will choose some of them,” Amorim said.

He confirmed that the club’s selection process would be completed in the coming days.

“We will make our decisions about the squad during the next week,” Amorim added.

The match against Chelsea was Milan’s latest fixture as they build towards the new Serie A campaign. However, the result also underlined the task facing Amorim as he assesses a group containing a significant number of players, including several youngsters.

Milan’s priority now is to use the remainder of their preparations to establish the squad that will begin the competitive season, with Amorim aiming to turn the positive aspects of their training period into a winning start.
