Kaizer Chiefs face Golden Arrows test as new coaches meet in MTN8

Kaizer Chiefs and Lamontville Golden Arrows will meet in an MTN8 quarter-final on Sunday, giving Fernando Da Cruz and Pitso Dladla their first major cup examination as the two coaches begin new eras at their respective clubs.

Da Cruz has made an encouraging start as Kaizer Chiefs head coach, leading the Glamour Boys to success in the Toyota Cup before they opened their Betway Premiership campaign with a 3-1 win over newly promoted Kruger United.

Those early results have offered an indication of the French coach’s ambitions at Naturena. Chiefs have displayed greater intensity and attacking intent while adapting to Da Cruz’s preferred game model.

The coach has nevertheless stressed that his project remains in its early stages. The MTN8 tie represents a substantially more demanding test, with the pressure of a knockout competition and a place in the semi-finals at stake.

Dladla is also overseeing the start of a new chapter at Golden Arrows after replacing Manqoba Mngqithi at the beginning of the season.

The Arrows boss has already taken charge of his first league match with Abafana Bes’thende, so Sunday’s fixture will not be his competitive debut. It will, however, be his first significant cup challenge against one of South Africa’s biggest clubs.

Dladla will want his team to build on the encouraging aspects of their opening league fixture and make an immediate statement in the MTN8. He will also be aiming to establish Golden Arrows as serious contenders for a semi-final place, following the club’s recent Nedbank Cup success.

The match sets up a tactical contest between two managers still developing their teams and attempting to put their own identities on them.

Da Cruz has been clear about his intention to make Kaizer Chiefs less predictable. The club strengthened its attacking options during the transfer window, giving the coach greater flexibility as he looks to shape his squad.

Wandile Duba’s display against Kruger United has added another selection dilemma. The 22-year-old came off the bench and scored twice after Flavio Da Silva was forced to leave the field because of an injury.

Mfundo Vilakazi remains another important creative option for Chiefs, further increasing the attacking choices available to Da Cruz ahead of the quarter-final.

For Dladla, the priority may be to keep Golden Arrows compact and frustrate their opponents. If the visitors can remain in the contest for an extended period, pressure could begin to build on a Chiefs side expected to control much of the game.

Chiefs will draw confidence from their victory on the opening weekend of the Betway Premiership, though, and will be determined to demonstrate that their positive beginning under Da Cruz reflects the start of something more substantial.

The MTN8 gives both coaches an opportunity to speed up the development of their teams.

For Da Cruz, victory would provide another significant result during an already promising opening to his time at Kaizer Chiefs. For Dladla, the match offers the chance to make an impression on a larger stage and show that Golden Arrows’ new era can compete with the country’s heavyweight clubs.
