Donnelly hat-trick gives South Africa commanding Olympic qualifying lead

Banyana Banyana took a major step towards the next stage of the CAF Women’s Olympic Qualifier with a 4-0 victory over Madagascar on Friday.

Ronnel Donelley opened the scoring for South Africa in the 30th minute, finishing from close range after meeting a free-kick.

The visitors controlled the first half and continued to dominate after the interval. Donelley completed her brace during the final 10 minutes of the second half, before going on to claim a hat-trick in the 61st minute when she converted Fikile Magada’s cross.

Hildah Magai added a fourth close-range finish to give Desiree Ellis’ side a substantial advantage before Tuesday’s second leg.

South Africa had received a bye into the second round of qualifying, while Madagascar reached this stage after overcoming South Sudan in the previous round.

The match was played at Toyota Stadium without supporters after Madagascar, the designated home side, requested that no fans be allowed into the ground.

The return fixture will also be held at Toyota Stadium on Tuesday, but supporters will be permitted to attend.
