Modiba expects Van Wyk to make immediate impact for Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Aubrey Modiba believes new signing Antonio van Wyk can give opposition defenders “sleepless nights” as the club begin their pursuit of domestic and continental success.

Van Wyk returned to South African football during the off-season after joining the Brazilians, adding another attacking option to a squad already rich in forward talent.

The winger could make his competitive debut on Saturday, when Miguel Cardoso’s side host Polokwane City in an MTN8 quarter-final at Lucas Moripe Stadium. Kick-off is at 18:00.

Modiba, who has extensive experience of playing at full-back, knows the problems that fast, direct wingers can create for defenders. He believes Van Wyk has the attributes to cause similar difficulties for opponents throughout the campaign.

“I hope Van Wyk give them (opposition defenders) sleepless nights because they’re always giving us fullbacks a tough time so I’m definitely going to encourage him to do that and hopefully he can help us by scoring goals as well,” Modiba said.

The arrival of Van Wyk is part of Sundowns’ preparations for a season in which they will attempt to regain the Betway Premiership title. Orlando Pirates claimed the crown last season, ending Sundowns’ hold on the championship.

Sundowns will also be aiming to compete strongly in the CAF Champions League and challenge for every domestic trophy available to them.

While the club’s established players are expected to carry significant responsibility, Modiba says the younger members of the squad can also make a major contribution. Several academy graduates have featured prominently during pre-season, providing Cardoso with additional options as he assesses the depth available to him.

“There’s a lot of youngsters in the team and those boys we can see they’re very hungry and know what to expect and this season, they’re gonna play a big role helping achieve what we want to achieve,” he said.

The opening MTN8 tie gives Sundowns an early chance to set the tone for the campaign and begin their pursuit of silverware positively. A victory over Polokwane City would also provide an immediate indication of how the Brazilians’ new-look attacking options are settling into Cardoso’s plans.

Van Wyk is among the additions expected to strengthen an already formidable Sundowns attack. His pace and creativity could give the side another way of breaking down tight defensive units, while Modiba also hopes the new arrival can contribute goals.

The match could therefore represent an important first step for Van Wyk after his return to South African football. Should he be selected, Polokwane City’s defenders may be the first opponents to experience the qualities that have prompted Modiba’s confident prediction.
