Louis Copley’s Arsenal progress checked by ACL rupture

Louis Copley has confirmed he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in Arsenal’s pre-season friendly against Real Betis, dealing a significant blow to the 19-year-old only days before the new season begins in England.

The midfielder was used at right-back after coming on at half-time against Real Betis. However, his appearance lasted only 10 minutes before he was forced to leave the pitch, with Theo Julian replacing him.

Copley later confirmed the seriousness of the injury in a post on Instagram, saying: “There are no words that can describe how I feel right now. From making my first appearance for the team during pre-season for the club I grew up supporting, to finding out I have torn my anterior cruciate ligament.”

He added: “The journey ahead will not be easy, but I will give everything I have to come back stronger and better.”

The injury is expected to prevent Copley from moving out on loan in the coming period. He had been hoping to secure a temporary move to gain regular first-team experience and increase his opportunities to play.

Copley had also featured at right-back in Arsenal’s first official friendly of their pre-season programme, against Girona. His attacking contributions in that match attracted attention as he continued to push for recognition within the club.

The teenager spent the second half of last season on loan at Crawley Town. Before that, he had been included among Arsenal’s substitutes for the first-team match against Club Brugge.

Copley is regarded as one of the leading players in Arsenal’s under-21 side and has worn the captain’s armband for the age-group team on several occasions.

His injury came during a period in which he was attempting to make a stronger impression on Arsenal’s senior set-up. The opportunity to feature in pre-season had given him exposure in a different position, after he had primarily operated in midfield.

Instead, the knee problem now represents a major interruption to his progress. Copley had already made an impression during the opening stages of Arsenal’s preparations, including his display against Girona, and had been seeking further first-team involvement before the campaign began.

The defender-midfielder’s latest setback leaves his immediate plans uncertain, with a loan move that had been under consideration now expected to be unavailable because of the ACL injury. His focus will instead be on recovering and returning to football after the serious setback confirmed following the Real Betis match.
