Kaizer Chiefs face MTN8 pressure, says former full-back Mabotsa

Kaizer Chiefs are under intense pressure to win the MTN8 after ending last season without a trophy, according to former full-back Isaac Mabotsa.

The Soweto club begin their campaign against Lamontville Golden Arrows at FNB Stadium at 18:00 on Sunday, with victory taking the winners through to the semi-finals. The last-four stage will be played over two legs.

Mabotsa believes Kaizer Chiefs understand the importance of progressing in the competition, particularly with new head coach Fernando Da Cruz already facing expectations to deliver silverware.

“I am not entirely satisfied with Kaizer Chiefs’ style of play. I have not observed the typical Kaizer Chiefs approach, particularly in the match against Kruger United last week. The team does not appear to be maintaining possession of the ball,” Mabotsa stated in an interview with KickOff.

The former defender said the expectation surrounding Sunday’s fixture was straightforward: Kaizer Chiefs must beat Lamontville Golden Arrows.

“The team is expected to win against Golden Arrows on Sunday. Even the coach recognizes the pressure to succeed in the MTN8, and the players themselves are under considerable stress to secure a trophy this season.

“The supporters are also eager for silverware, as evidenced by their expressions.

“Kaizer Chiefs has always been renowned as a team of ball handlers. We need to demonstrate high-quality, attractive football.”

Mabotsa’s assessment comes after what he described as a performance that did not reflect the style traditionally associated with Kaizer Chiefs. He was particularly critical of the side’s ability to retain possession in their match against Kruger United last week.

The club’s failure to win a trophy last season has increased the significance of the MTN8, with Da Cruz beginning his tenure under pressure to produce results. The demands do not rest solely on the coach, according to Mabotsa, who also highlighted the responsibility shouldered by the players.

Kaizer Chiefs’ supporters are likewise waiting for a return to winning ways and are hoping the MTN8 can provide an early opportunity to challenge for silverware. Mabotsa said that desire was visible in the reaction of the club’s fans.

The match against Lamontville Golden Arrows is a straight knockout contest. Only the winning side will move into the semi-finals, which are decided over two matches.

For Kaizer Chiefs, the fixture offers an immediate chance to ease some of the pressure surrounding the team.
