Lamine Yamal’s calm final-day promise comes true as Spain lift World Cup

Lamine Yamal told Spain team-mates they would return home as world champions before the World Cup final against Argentina, and previously unseen footage released after the victory has revealed the teenager’s remarkable confidence.

The Spanish Football Federation published exclusive video through its official channels showing the final hours before the match. In the recording, Barcelona winger Yamal speaks calmly and firmly before walking out on to the pitch for the biggest game of his career.

“We will return to Spain as world champions,” Yamal says.

At the time, the statement may have sounded like the optimistic prediction of a teenage player preparing for his first World Cup final. After the final whistle, however, it became a prediction fulfilled by Luis de la Fuente’s side.

The footage also captures the composure Yamal displayed before the match. Despite the significance of the occasion, he says: “I am not nervous. I think we still do not fully realise that we are going to play in a World Cup final.”

“I never think about defeat, losing never crosses my mind, all I imagine is lifting the trophy,” he says.

Yamal’s influence on Spain’s campaign extended well beyond his goalscoring figures. He scored once during the tournament but played in every match, having missed out on a starting place only in the opening game because of a physical problem.
