Mamelodi Sundowns free up foreign-player place after Miguel Reisinho exit

Mamelodi Sundowns have opened up a foreign-player place after Portuguese midfielder Miguel Reisinho confirmed his departure from the club.

The 27-year-old announced his exit on social media, bringing an end to a spell during which he was part of the Sundowns squad that won the CAF Champions League.

Reisinho had been expected to leave after finding it difficult to establish himself in head coach Miguel Cardoso’s starting line-up. His departure now gives the Tshwane club the opportunity to sign another foreign player before the transfer window closes.

The midfielder joined Sundowns at around the same time as fellow Portuguese player Nuno Santos, although the pair experienced contrasting fortunes in South Africa.

Santos became a regular presence in the team and enjoyed consistent playing opportunities. Reisinho, by contrast, spent much of his time on the substitutes’ bench or watching matches from the stands as he struggled to force his way into the starting XI.

In total, the left-footed midfielder made 14 appearances for Sundowns. His time at the club nevertheless ended with a major honour after he helped the side claim the CAF Champions League.

Reisinho’s exit comes as Sundowns prepare to begin their 2026/27 campaign. Their opening Betway Premiership fixture against Marumo Gallants was postponed last weekend, leaving the club’s MTN8 quarter-final against Polokwane City as their first competitive match of the season.

That game will be played at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

Sundowns will be without striker Brayan Leon for the encounter. The forward is suspended and will not be available as the club starts its bid for success in the MTN8.

The departure of Reisinho gives Sundowns greater flexibility in the final stages of the transfer window. The club can now consider adding another overseas player to a squad that is preparing to compete across domestic and continental competitions.

Reisinho’s spell at Sundowns was ultimately limited in terms of regular first-team football, but his contribution formed part of a squad that delivered one of the most significant achievements in the club’s recent history. His move also leaves Nuno Santos as the Portuguese player who remains at the centre of attention following their very different experiences since arriving in Tshwane.
